“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” -Gandhi
My name is Yumi, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Second Language Studies (SLS). I will receive a Bachelor's degree in SLS and a Minor in Korean in May 2014. Being a second generation Japanese & Korean I was fortunate enough to be raised in a multilingual environment and was encouraged to embrace my roots and who I am as a multicultural person. Growing up in Texas, learning Spanish is required at a young age, but as a child it was just another class to take in school. Little did I know that learning Japanese and Korean at home but English and Spanish at school was only the beginning of my journey in the teacher and mentor I want to become. Luckily, I get to call Hawai'i my new home. Hawai'i is a melting pot of various cultures and languages which has essentially broaden my horizon as a person and professional. This has given me the opportunity to look at many different paths and choose one that is right for me. By gathering what I have learned at a young age and also as a student in the Second Language Studies program I want my future students to know that language can take you places that you never thought could be possible. |
